Temptation comes at us from all sides, every single day of our lives. It comes hard and fast. It comes slowly, and quiet. There is no hard and fast rule about temptation except for the fact that it is coming. Satan is out to destroy us, and he has demons devoted to sending temptation into our lives, each and every day.
Yet, we don’t want to fall into temptation. We want to be more like Christ. We want to do the right thing. Our flesh is so weak, and Satan is the Father of lies.
How do we overcome temptation?
Christ was tempted. He lived a perfect, sinless life.Yet, he did not lead a temptation free life. No, right after his baptism – the beginning of his public ministry – temptation came.
The same is true for us. It seems as though the baptismal waters are hardly still and we are being thrown into the full swing of temptation.
How can we face this very real spiritual battle that is going on in our hearts and lives?
Looking at the life of Jesus, we see one thing that He used to battle temptation – and if it worked for Jesus, I am sure that it is something that will work for us as well.
Jesus used the Word of God.
The Word of God is known to be a two edge sword. The sword can help us cut out the things in our life that is a stumbling block – or it can be used to cut away outward – we can use it to deal with the temptation in our lives.
How do we do this?
- Daily Reading of God’s Word- In order for the Word of God to be effective in our lives,we have to read it. We have to know it more than just the Bible stories we have heard as kids. We have to be in the Word more than Sunday mornings when a Preacher is teaching the Bible. Sweet sister, we need to be in the Word of God every single day. We need to know it for ourselves. Satan counts on the fact that we don’t know the Bible. That we don’t care about what the Bible says. He wants us to be comfortable with just information on Sunday – because that means our lives are only being changed and challenged once a week. Quiet Times are so important- even Jesus had them!
- Studying God’s Word – We need to take it up a level from just reading the Word. We need to study the Word. We need to study out the areas of sin in our lives. Anger an issue? Study it out! Know the verses. Don’t just read a Psalm a day and think it will keep the Devil away! NO! Take ownership over your walk with the Lord!
- Memorize the Word – Now, we are getting even more personal. It is time we quit just reading, and even quit just studying- and start putting our money where our mouth is. It is time we rise up, and take our strongholds captive, and begin to memorize the Word. Jesus was able to quote scripture right back to Satan. We need to be able to pull the verses right from our memory so that we can stop temptation before it ever starts!
- Pray the Word of God- God’s Word is powerful! It is effective! It is HIS WORD! Every part of it- He inspired! So, let’s take these verses we are memorizing, and let’s put them into prayer action! Write them in your War Room or in your prayer journal! There is power in praying the Word of God!
Temptation is real – and it is hard! There is a battle that goes on every day for our purity, and it is a true fight to. Yet, God has given us a powerful sword to do battle with – but we have to learn how to use it!
