February 14 can be a dreaded day. For some, they see it as a commercialized day. You shouldn’t need a specific day to share love. Shouldn’t we be doing that every day? Yet, others like the idea of being intentional about showing others just how much we care.
Both sides are “right.” We should show love every day – and it doesn’t have to be overly commercialized. Yet, it is nice to be intentional too.
Yet, it doesn’t just have to be romantic love. It doesn’t have to be just to family, either. there is a bigger love we need to be sharing. An eternal love we should be showing.
There is nothing wrong with buying your sweetie a card or a gift. You can even use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to fill your kids love tanks. But don’t miss out on this golden ticket opportunity to share the greatest love story every told.
We use Christmas and Easter as prime holiday time to share about Jesus. But, I believe Valentine’s Day is a perfect day to share the gospel.
The gospel is a story of love.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
Jesus came on a rescue mission of love to redeem the world that hated him. He even said,
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8
As followers of Christ, we are to put on His character. The best way we can do that is by sharing the gospel message.
Not just on Christmas
Not just on Easter
Not just on Valentine’s Day
Not just at church
Not just on a mission trip.
We need to stop waiting for moments, days and events and realize the Great commission is for every day of our lives. Yes, we can use these moments, holidays, and events to be intentional – just like we can use Valentine’s Day to be intentional with those we love – but we must remember that the Great Commission didn’t give a time period- it just said “Go”
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
