Have you lost your joy in reading God’s Word each day?
Have you become less than consistent in your daily quiet times?
Did you know that only one-third of all adult Americans read the Bible once a week? I wonder how many adult Americans reads the Bible every day. Only the same amount believe that the Bible is completely accurate in what it teaches, while less that one-fourth of Americans believe that it can be taken literally word-for-word. (Research facts are taken from Barna Research)
Those are some very disturbing statistics.
When we lose our joy for God’s Word we leave a wide-open door for the enemy to step in and begin a process of spiritual destruction.
The interesting thing about this is that he doesn’t come in with a nuclear plan to destroy your life. No, he is much, much more subtle than that.
He begins to interest you in things that will cause your heart to slowly but steadily grow lukewarm, than apathetic. His strategy is patient and slow – he slowly whispers lies that little compromises won’t matter very much or that you can get away with that little “guilty pleasure”, also known as sin.
Day after day he weaves his web of deception in your life.
Until the moment when the big attack occurs. Suddenly, you are on the battlefield, surrounded on every side by the enemy of your soul and completely disarmed.
You’ve not put on the armor of God in so long that you can’t remember when the last time was that you actually wore it, Somewhere along the way you lost track of your shield of faith, and your sword of the spirit has grown dusty and dull.
And what occurs is the only thing that can occur in this situation….you’re ambushed and defeated.
But you don’t have to stay there!
No child of God has to remain in a situation of defeat, destruction, and deception! God has provided a way out and it begins with daily time in His Word and prayer.
How can you rekindle your joy for God’s Word?
1. Commitment to reading the Bible on a daily basis. God’s Word is our instruction manual for how to live our lives. God gave us His Word so that we would have a spiritual worldview. If our worldview isn’t shaped by God’s Word, it will be shaped by the world. There is no other worldview! If we want to daily live in joy and victory, our worldview must be shaped only by God’s Word and nothing else; and this will only happen when we commit to spending daily, quality time reading God’s Word. It can only shape our lives when we know what it says.
2. Commitment to daily spending time in prayer. Prayer isn’t designed for God’s benefit, but ours. Our hearts are very prone to distraction; so often they get caught up in all of the stuff here on earth – the temporal stuff while we are completely oblivious to all of those things that have eternal value. 1 Corinthians 3 clearly illustrates that one day all of the works we have done will be tested by fire to see if they have eternal value. We remain focused on those things that have eternal value when we commit to daily time in prayer, which helps us to keep God’s Kingdom our focus.
3. Commitment to daily hiding God’s Word in your heart. Psalm 119 is filled with verses that illustrate the long-term benefits of scripture memorization, some of which include being wiser than our teachers and being wiser than our enemies. Joshua 1 tells us that hiding God’s Word in our heart will bring us success. Why? Because the more we commit God’s Word to memory, the more our thoughts align with God’s thoughts and the more our ways align with His ways. God’s thoughts and ways will always bring success. Perhaps they will not bring success according to the world’s standards, but it will most certainly bring the only success that is worth striving for – godly success!
4. Regular times of spiritual evaluation. Have you ever done a spiritual evaluation? I am often surprised at how we can plan our 2-week vacations in far greater detail than we plan our spiritual journeys. If we hope to maintain joy in our lives, we must learn to set aside regular times of spiritual evaluation, asking ourselves, and even a trusted friend, key questions that identify areas where growth is needed and the strategy needed to help that growth take place.
I have created special Bible reading and prayer journal designed to help you do these four things!
The Read Through the Bible in 365 Days Bible Reading Challenge is a 55-page Bible Reading and prayer journal that includes a strategy section, Bible and prayer journaling sections and scripture memorization cards.
What’s more is that when you sign up, you will receive a new journal each month with a new reading plan for that month to help you read through the entire Bible in 365 days!
