There is so much truth in Christmas that often gets pushed out. We are so busy trying to squeeze in family traditions, activities, gift buying, and baking- that we can often lose track of how much time we are spending on the truth of Christmas. There is nothing wrong with the traditions, activities, movies, and other Christmas festivities- but it all goes wrong when we focus more on the holiday and less on the truth of the holiday.
This year, I decided my family had to focus more on truth than tradition. We had to get back to some of the basics of Christmas. So, I decided I wanted an advent guide that did simply that.
There wouldn’t be daily crafts- because I didn’t want more crafts.
There wouldn’t be movies to watch, items to bake, or books to read. Just simply scripture to share.
I wanted to move back to the truth of Christmas.
Now, hear me out. You won’t find me playing the Christmas Shame Game. We have had lots of Christmas’ where we have done other things. We have used some amazing Advent tools with our kids, and they have learned a lot out of the fun and the play that was involved.
I just needed something a little slower this year. That focused more on preparing our hearts than preparing an activity.
This Advent guide is simple. Read the passage of the day with your kids. Share together as a family what it means. Have conversation around scripture. Then, based on skill level, your children can do one of three easy steps:
- Simply draw a picture of what you have read.
- Draw a picture and either write out one of the verses or write what it meant to them.
- Just write out a verse or what the verse meant.
It really is that simple. In the back of the guide, there is a place where you can make a chain using the advent reading guide- but it is totally optional as a countdown to Christ birthday. There is also two ornaments you can simply color – they don’t require anything but coloring. You can totally leave these activities if you want to stay super simple.
Christmas doesn’t have to be complicated. Slow down and teach the truth of Christmas this year.
