My eyes filled with tears as I closed my devotional. I had my time with God, but something didn’t feel right. I had read my verses and read the devotional guide that went with it. I had prayed and asked God to bless my day, be with some sick family members, and protect my family. The whole time, I felt like something was missing. I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
Over the next few days and weeks, I continued the pattern. Get up, make my coffee, and pull out my Bible and my devotional guide. I did my reading, spent some time praying, but the feeling wasn’t going away. Every day ended either in tears or confusion.
Then, one morning, it hit me. My Quiet Time had become shallow. Routine. There was no depth.
Depth. That was what I was looking for. I had done Quiet Time for years. Every day, I got up, read my Bible and had prayer time. But it had become a duty, and it had become shallow.
I was depending on the words in devotionals over the Words of God.
Oh, I was reading scripture. Every day. But I was reading one to five verses and then reading what someone else thought on the matter. I wasn’t searching scripture for truth. I wasn’t digging in deep. I was just becoming comfortable and complacent with the way that my walk with God was.
I am so thankful that God didn’t let me stay that way. I believe God put that uneasiness in my heart so that He could shake up my quiet time.
Maybe you’re like me, and you have a quiet time each and every day – but you depend on devotional materials to tell you what scripture says.
Maybe you read every day just to mark a box off a checklist, or because a Pastor or Small group leader told you it was the right thing to do.
Maybe you have never had a quiet time before – and you really don’t understand why having a quiet time is that important at all.
Friend, I have been in all those places. Each and every one. There is no judgment coming from me.
I knew that day that my Quiet Time needed a jump start. I knew that I wanted more from my relationship with God than just a check on a sheet or a devotional with some highlighting in it.
I wanted to know God on a deeper level.
We all go through seasons of life where we become comfortable- and maybe even complacent – in our walk with God. We all go through times when we feel like our walk is shallow. We all need a jump start every now and then.
No matter where you are at with your walk with God, we still have deeper to go. New truths to find – and a relationship that is ever growing.
Don’t let another day go by just being comfortable with a devotional and laundry list of prayers. Jump Start your quiet time today!
