I usually wear headphones when I clean my house.
I will listen to historical documentaries, music, or sermons on YouTube to turn the monotonous task into something enjoyable.
But one day the thought came to me: What if I used that time to pray over my home and family? How would it change the atmosphere of our home?
Not long before that, I had watched the movie War Room and it deeply impacted my life. Since our home was small at the time, I didn’t have a room I could dedicate to prayer, I decided to make myself a prayer journal that I call my war room.
This turned my whole house into a big, giant war room!
- I could intercede for family.
- I could pray for the relationships I have with each of my children.
- I could bathe my husband in prayer-protection.
- I could cry out for the salvation of my neighbors.
I could come before the throne of the Father in supplication, intercession, and sweet communion all while doing tasks I do every day.
And why shouldn’t we turn these daily tasks into reminders to “pray without ceasing”? Isn’t it part of our role as Proverbs 31 women; to not only be nurturers as we see after the physical affairs of our home, but to be warriors as we bear the spiritual aspects of our home before the Father?
Oh yes, I know that our husbands are to be spiritual leaders of our homes. And they are!
But, we are their helpmates.
And as their helpmate, we help bear the enormous burden of leadership on our knees…..or as we clean.
And the idea of mingling the two – the physical and the spiritual – was so profound for me, because it reminded me of how God truly wants us to live our lives.
So often we compartmentalize our lives into secular tasks and spiritual disciplines.
- Taking our kids to football is secular, but taking them to youth group is spiritual.
- Going to the grocery store is secular, but going to Wednesday Bible study is spiritual.
- Watching a movie with our main squeeze is secular, but reading a book by Priscilla Shirer is spiritual.
But I don’t think it is God’s will to live our lives with these boxes.
For the child of God, everything we do should be spiritual! God should infuse and even ooze out of every task we do. Little league games can turn into divine appointments. Grocery store runs can turn into spontaneous prayer meetings, and having an in-home date night with our hubs strengthens the foundation of our home.
And cleaning our home can turn into a war cry!
In my post 6 Amazing Prayers to Make Your House into a War Room, I gave sample prayers you can pray over each room in your home as you clean.
These, of course, are just to help get you started.
In addition to that post, I also made these Pocket Prayers that you can slip into your pocket as your cleaning.
