We live in a broken world. You don’t have to look far to see that wickedness is everywhere. Things like cancer, child abuse, neglect, famine, disease- our world is groaning from the decades upon decades of sin that has lived in it. Yet, it is where we have to live. We can’t move on to heaven until either Jesus returns or God calls us home. How do we live in our world when the land around us is wicked?
As I was reading in Deuteronomy 18 this week, I was reminded of this concept. The Israelite are getting a final word from Moses before they head into the Promise Land. It isn’t going to be easy to claim – yet it is a land of abundance and promise.
Yet, it was wicked.
When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. Deuteronomy 18:9
The land that God had given them – had wickedness in it.
The thought perplexed me.
I thought of other places in scripture where it says that God is a good Father – and that he wouldn’t give us a stone when we wanted fish. Why would he give us a land that is wicked- when the people were coming from a wicked place?
I think the answer is clear. It hit my like a brick.
God wants worshipers- not robots. God wants obedience – because we love Him, not because we have to robotically.
Wickedness or Obedience. Which will you choose?
He doesn’t make the land wicked so that we will be tempted. We choose wicked- Adam and Eve choose wicked- all the way back in the garden. It has been passed down generation to generation.
So, God makes a plan. Before the foundation of the world, God made a plan for redemption- and the plan was Jesus Christ.
God also had a plan for the Israelites. A plan for them to go into the land and completely destroy the wicked.
God always has a plan. Yet, He wants obedience. He wants obedience out of a heart of love – with a right heart attitude.
It is funny how God works. This week, I started a Bible Study with my daughter on obedience called “Because I Said So”, where we walk through scriptures and see how people in scripture obeyed or disobeyed. It has opened my eyes to what God wants in obedience.
Obedience Directly – right away.
Obedience without question – because we love Him. With a happy heart.
Obedience the right way – doing things the way God says.
