What makes Christianity different then any other religion? We hold to a high moral standard, we live by a book, we claim to have a powerful God. Yet, many other religions in the world claim some of these same things – and honestly, some even live out their faith in more real and tangible ways. What sets us apart? It is who Jesus Christ is – and the personal relationship that we share with Him.
Who Is Jesus?
Learning about who Jesus Christ actually is – His birth, the prophecies about Him, His life, His Character, His death and His Resurrection – all of these things are so important. Today, we are going to look at this Jesus who came to save us from our sins. We are going to look at what sets Him apart from other men – and from other Gods.
Jesus Christ: His Birth
Jesus came to this earth in human form. The book of Philippians says that
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)
John also shares this same thought:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14 ESV)
In the gospel of Matthew, we see the lineage of Christ through Joseph. Joseph, who can be traced back to Solomon and King David himself. We see in Luke chapter three that Jesus lineage is tracked through Mary- all the way back to David. Jesus Christ came just as the Bible said He would, he came from the lineage of David, from the tribe of Judah – a descendant of Abraham.
He came through virgin birth- just as the scriptures said He would
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14 ESV)
He didn’t come as royalty might. He was born in a manager, and shepherds and angels herald his birth. Wise men followed the star and found him some time later, when he was a young child.
Jesus Christ: His Life
We don’t see much in scripture from the time they return time when Jesus goes into the temple as a young boy through his adulthood. We know he followed in his Earthly fathers footsteps, and learned the trade of a carpenter. Yet, we find him when he is about 33 years old. We see Jesus do some very specific things during His Life:
- Jesus was Baptized- Before Jesus began His public ministry, He had John the Baptist baptize Him. He did this as an example for us- and to be in obedience with the Father. We too should be baptized (be sure to follow this series for a post on that!) in obedience to the Father.
- Jesus was Tempted – After His Baptism, Jesus went to the desert where He was tempted- just like us. He used scripture to combat the temptations that He faced.
- Jesus had a pattern for ministry-Jesus began His public ministry. He had a very specific pattern in scripture of teach, touch, and rest. He would teach the people, he would perform some miracles- and then he would rest.
- Jesus discipled others- Jesus made time for others in His life and trained them – with him- to do ministry. We too are given a ministry to lead others to know Jesus and then to disciple them in truth!
