Anyone who has ever been a voulenteer for Vacation Bible School knows the fatigue that comes with it. You are pouring into the lives of the children that God has sent to your church. You are dancing, singing, crafting, and sharing the love of God. By the mid point of the week – the exahustion starts to kick it. If you are not careful – that exahustion will begin to show on your face, instead of the love of Christ.
Vacation Bible School is one of the biggest weeks on the church calendar. It is a time we are reaching out- not reaching in. We are meeting families right where they are at. We are doing the main thing God left us here to do – share the gospel with those around us.
How can we overcome Vacation Bible School Fatigue?
5 Ways to Overcome Vacation Bible School Fatigue
- Let God Pour Into You-
This is so important. Make sure you are spending your own time with Jesus. Don’t give these sweet children your left overs- make sure you are running on full steam! If we are not feeding our inner man, our flesh man will take over- and we will be serving in our flesh and not our spirit.
Good evening girls! Checking in for my daily accountability! Reading in #proverbs 7 today 📖. The topic? The foolish woman 👧. The chapter gives practical wisdom to protect yourself from her- and if we, as women, follow it, it will protect us from becoming her! 🔹🔸🔹🔸In verse 8, we see that the young man goes “near her corner” 🏠- we need to be careful thinking we are “strong enough” 💪to get close enough to sin, without sinning. 🔸🔹🔸🔹Our flesh is weak- we must be sure we are guarding ourselves from sin 🔸🔹🔸🔹 #worshipfulliving #goodmorninggirls
- Plan ahead- I am a planner. Type A to the max. So, in order to keep myself sane during Vacation Bible School – I plan. I have my children set out their clothes- just like it was a school day. We go to bed at school bed time (even me!). I plan out easy suppers. A few that I like to do is: Breakfast Casserole (with fruit and biscuits as side), BBQ chicken with Mac and Cheese and green beans, Pot Roast with all the fixin’s in the crock pot, and one night, we order Pizza. Make sure you are planning ahead of time!
- Look over your lessons – I think as adults, especially if we are raised in church – we think that we know all these stories. We could teach them backwards with our eyes closed. However, we need to be sure we are prepared. Read over your lesson, be sure you get all the supplies together, and have everything beside the door ready to go.
- Give yourself time to rest- Our Vacation Bible School is during the day – from 9-12. I make sure I give me and my children time to rest in the afternoon. I realize that after watching so many children, my eyes are tired. They need a break. So, find quiet activities for the kiddos, kick your feet up, and relax. It is okay.
- Let go of perfectionism – It is okay if your house isn’t perfect this week. It is okay if all the laundry doesn’t get done. It is okay if you eat on paper plates. Give yourself the freedom for these things. In the eyes of eternity- the better work – the most important- is investing in the lives of the kids you are ministering to. Your chores will still be there next week- I promise!
Vacation Bible School has eternal rewards – not physical ones. You may not get one bit of praise here on earth. However, God sees you. He is pleased. Eternal rewards sweet sister, eternal rewards.
