We all want our homes to be somewhere our families want to come to. We want it to be a safe place- a haven. In today’s world, there are few safe places to run – and the storm of life is raging around us outside. That is why I love doing this challenge each year with my friend Courtney – because I KNOW there is value in it. So are you ready to jump in? I know I am!
I know that word haven isn’t one that is used every day- so, let me share with you a little vocab lesson- but it will really help, and I promise, it will be painless:
A place of safety or refuge. This definition was found at dictionary.com
Our homes should be a place of safety and refuge. The world is giving us demands. Our husbands have demands at work – and they are bombarded by the world each day. Deadlines, people, temptation. If you are a mom that works outside the home- you face those things too. Even if you don’t work outside the home- we have those same things. Our kids have it too. No matter what your life looks like- there are places that are not safe and don’t feel like a refuge. Our homes should be those places.
As women, we set the tone in our home. I feel like it is our place in the home to set the attitude. Even if you work outside the home (which I do!), you can do small things each day to make your home a haven.
However, I want to be honest – last year, when I committed to this- there was a struggle in my home. Week one, we lit a candle and prayed for peace- and my kids were anything but peaceful, which pushed into my marriage. You have to know that if you are going to take this challenge- you are going to be met by opposition. As a Christian, we have an enemy- and he certainly doesn’t want our homes to be haven’s.
So, will you join me in the challenge below? We will also be focusing on the Fruit of the Spirit this month as well! I am starting Monday, October 6th!
Week 1: Light a Candle. Pray for peace in your home. Focus on peace and patience.
Week 2: Play soft music in your home. Whatever kind your family likes. Classical, praise, whatever will set the mood in your home. Focus on the attitudes of gentleness and self -control this week.
Week 3: Plan a family fun night (or day!) Focus on kindness and joy this week.
Week 4: Focus on the Kitchen, the heart of your home. Bake some yummy fall goodness. Focus on love, goodness and faithfulness.
Because this is such an awesome challenge, I plan on doing some fun free stuff along the way. I wanted to start with giving you some verse cards that you can hang around your house to help you to remember to pray for the different qualities we are working on. You can get yours below! These are the verses I plan on covering each week as I share with you about the challenge in my home- both the good and the bad (because I am sure there will be both!) Check out the verses below!
*Please note. Almost all the cards say week one. Just pick one or two to memorize each week!
I highly encourage you to check out all of Courtney’s post on this- she has an awesome video as well! 🙂
The contributor girls and I are going to be sharing about some other ways we make our homes run smoothly this month- but these are our challenges! We will check in every Monday! Also, I am sure we will be chatting about it on Facebook! 🙂
So, let’s chat a bit – are you in? Let’s go on this journey together!
