When I started homeschooling 15 years ago, I was so intimidated. I was overwhelmed with all the choices I had to make. There are so many different types of curriculum and styles of homeschooling; I became worried I wouldn’t pick what was best for our children. It was scary, but I knew God would show me the way.
In the early years, I was listening a lot to what others were telling me to do, and it caused a lot of issues in our homeschool. I wasn’t listening to what my kids were telling me and I was making many mistakes because of that fact. As the years went by, I started to listen to my motherly instincts and the Holy Spirit. When I started trusting God with my kiddos, things went more smoothly. The kids were no longer frustrated with my indecision.
About 9 years ago, God started working in my heart about how I could instill godly character into the hearts of my children. My teaching became more focused on positive reinforcement rather than negative consequences. I soon found out that teaching the right responses to my children affected them more than disciplining for the wrong responses they were having. I was giving them the tools they needed to make the right choices. We started out teaching the virtues in the Bible like kindness, patience, love, and honesty. We would spend one week going over Bible verses to go with each virtue. We would act out scenarios that would let them practice the right behavior. We saw results in just weeks of this character training. We saw attitudes change and hearts become tender to each other.
Character training became a big part of our homeschooling life. We were no longer just seeing physical and intellectual growth; we were seeing huge spiritual growth. God was being glorified in our school. I won’t lie and say we don’t have days of frustration, but they have significantly diminished. I will tell you that those days of chaos are days I try to work my plan and not God’s. He knows what is best for us and our families and once we relinquish control, He can do his work in our lives.
This idea of giving God control can be used in every aspect of our lives. When we take our hands off, He can show us how very perfect His plan is. When we surrender our plans for His, we receive peace that we never thought existed. I promise that if you trust Him with your life, He will show up and do amazing things. We don’t always know how His plans will unfold, but He has a good plan for our lives. His promise in Romans 8:28 is life changing if you believe it. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. He is so good to us. We just have to trust in and rely on Him to do what He says He will do. May God bless you as you seek Him and let go of your plans in exchange for His.
